The faces are going to require the greatest skill, the most nuanced color combinations. So…here we go.
I started with the highlights (that’s the needle you see stabbing her in the forehead).
My sewing set up: a magnifying light (with cut strands of embroidery floss hanging on the arm), the bundles of face colors on the stool, along with scissors and tea. By combining 2 slightly different strands of floss on each needle, I can blend the colors better. (Below) Days later:
Only noticing now that one eye is slightly higher than the other….Not quite finished yet. How does my first face compare to the originals? (Below)
Need to look more closely (Below):
.w-e-l-l……no, not up to the skills of professional Medieval embroiderer. I would NOT be accepted into the guild. Should I rip it out and re-do it? Let’s see how the rest of it goes. If I’m able to improve my stitching enough, then maybe yes, do it over. Just thinking here: at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC, they have a textile study center. People can go online, search their stored textile items, and make a request to view them in person. I think I should check and see if I can view some of the actual Opus Angelicanum faces up close. Photos will no longer do. Meanwhile:
