In my Domestic Markings and Strata series, I have sewn buttons, snaps, buckles and sewing tools between layers of cloth, trapunto style, to form fossil-like impressions. The objects are first sewn onto a layer of heavy wool, then covered by a layer of dyed, vintage damask linen. By tightly pulling the hand stitches around each object, the forms become clearly visible. Some appear to be freshly exposed artifacts; others are made to resemble columns of hieroglyphic symbols.
